In Focus: Catching Up With Dayanara, Sushmita, Leila, Lupita, And Riyo

As if our excitement over the 65th Miss Universe competition isn't enough, adding to the frenzy is the fact that quite a number of past Miss Universe titleholders have arrived in the country! Among those who confirmed for the "reunion of queens" include Miss Universe 1991 Lupita Jones, Miss Universe 1993 Dayanara Torres, Miss Universe 1994 Sushmita Sen, Miss Universe 2007 Riyo Mori, and Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes. Torres, Sen, Mori, and Lopes are part of the judges panel.

So before we meet the newest queen on January 30, let's first take a look at what have happened in the lives of the confidently beautiful women of the universe of generations past since they passed on their crowns:


1. Miss Universe 1991 Lupita Jones

1994 – Jones created her own production company called Promocertamen, which later became the official producer of Nuestra Belleza México, Mexico’s official pageant show.

1997 – She created El Modelo Mexico, the first all-male pageant.

2000 – Jones was appointed as United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Goodwill Ambassador.

2008-2014 – Together with pageant director Osmel Sousa, they worked as judges for reality competition show Nuestra Belleza Latina.




2. Miss Universe 1993 Dayanara Torres

1994-1999 – She had a very successful Philippine showbiz career, appearing on three movies (Basta't Kasama Kita, Hataw Na, Type Kita Walang Kokontra)  and on dance variety show ASAP.

1995 – She founded the Dayanara Torres Foundation, focused on providing scholarships to poor Filipino and Puerto Rican Students.

1995 – Torres bagged the Best New Female TV Personality in the 10th PMPC Star Awards.

2000 – She married singer Marc Anthony, and had children with him: Namely Cristian Anthony Muñiz and Ryan Anthony Muñiz.

2008 – She published her self-help book Married to Me: How Committing to Myself Led to Triumph After Divorce, together with book author Jeannette Torres-Alvarez.



3. Miss Universe 1994 Sushmita Sen

1996 – Sen started her Bollywood career, where she has since appeared in over 30 movies, and earned three nominations (Filmfare Best Supporting Actress for Sirf Tum in 1997 and Filhaal... in 2002)

2000 – Sen won several Best Supporting Actress awards for her role in Biwi No. 1. These include Filmfare Awards, Zee Cine Awards, Screen Awards, and International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA).

2000 – She adopted daughter Renée, becoming a good role model for adoptive parents in India.

2009 – Sen created I Am Foundation, focusing on various causes such as education and healthcare "to make the world a better place to live in."

2010 – Sen adopted another girl named Alishah.



4. Miss Universe 2007 Riyo Mori

2008 – Mori opened  IRM Academy, her ballet school together with her mother Ikuko Mori. Mori currently is the school's artistic director.



5. Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes 

2013 – Lopes confirmed her engagement to Atlanta Falcons quarterback Osi Umenyiora.

2015 – Lopes marries Umenyiora in Angola, her home country.
