Because Reading is the Key to the Country’s Progress

Because Reading is the Key to the Country’s Progress

As to quote former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, “Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.”

In this day and age where people prefer more visuals, whether through images or videos, as a means of learning, the tradition of reading still remains both important and relevant. One should not underestimate the power of reading, as it can change or move a person.

Whether print or digital, reading literary works remains the best way for anyone, especially children, to learn more about the world, or even themselves. It is important for book writers and authors to craft literary works that are compelling to every reader, both young and old, such that it can be passed through generations and beyond.

Thankfully, the hard work of these authors are duly recognized by two organizations: National Book Development Board (NBDB) and Manila Critics Circle (MCC), through their annual award-giving body National Book Awards.

Now on its 34th year, the National Book Awards gives recognition to authors who pour in blood, sweat, and tears in crafting literary works for everyone, including future generations, to appreciate. For this year, 83 literary works are nominated in 26 categories, and the nominees comprises of a good mix of veteran and neophyte book authors.

Whether it may be poetry, fiction, non-fiction, or graphic novels, the efforts of book authors do not go unrecognized, as they contribute towards improving the literacy of Filipinos especially the youth.
