Wellbeing is important but can be elusive in today’s hectic lifestyle. For majority of people, little physical effort is involved in their work, domestic chores, transportation, and leisure. Children are not able to run around and play as much as they used to. This change in routine and habits has made it even more critical to find ways to integrate activities that promote overall well-being. It is for this reason that Mondelez International institutionalized well-being into the entire organization—from its operations all the way to the day-to-day work of its employees across 165 countries worldwide.
Anchored on the belief that the health of individuals, communities, and the planet are inextricably linked, Mondelez brings together its employees, suppliers, and community partners to work together to drive meaningful change towards the well-being of people and the planet.
“The Call for Well-being is Mondelez’ call to action to create positive impact on the environment we operate in, as well as the communities we serve,” explained Shanahan Chua, Head of Corporate and Government Affairs of Mondelez International in the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. “Well-being is really ingrained in our business. It’s about advocating proper nutrition and active play, while we delight consumers with treats to celebrate moments of joy.”
In hopes of strengthening the advocacy for holistic wellness, Olympic Silver Medalist Hidilyn Diaz joined Mondelez employees at the Nangka Elementary School in Marikina for the Company’s Joy School program: An annual event conducted by Mondelez International to promote nutrition education and active play in their adopted public elementary schools in the Philippines.
Diaz lifted not just the barbell during the Rio Olympics 2016; the 25-year-old Zamboangeña lifted the spirit of the Filipino community when she ended the 20-year Olympic medal drought in the country. Being the first Filipina to win such a prestigious competition proves that anyone can be a champion—especially if you know how your well-being can strongly affect your chances of fulfilling your goals.
Students at Nangka Elementary School, La Huerta Elementary School in Parañaque, and Esteban Abada Elementary School in Quezon City learned and participated in traditional games many of us used to play on the streets like “Tumbang Preso” and “Patintero.” Hidilyn also taught kids simple exercise routines and inspired them to pursue their dreams—no matter what. Hidilyn also talked about the benefits of a healthy body, as well as the role of active play and proper nutrition in general well-being.
“Programs like Joy Schools help open the minds of the youth to be more active and have a chance at development through games, physical fitness, and active play. It also gives children something fun and engaging to do,” said Diaz.
Joy Schools is the flagship social responsibility program of Mondelez in the country. Implemented in partnership with the Philippine Business for Social Progress, Joy Schools is a community partnership with public elementary schools for a nutrition program which provides supplemental, in-school feeding for 400 severely undernourished elementary students for nine months as well as initiatives that help promote nutrition education and active play in its adopted four public elementary schools.
“At Mondelez, creating moments of joy also includes promoting proper nutrition, physical activity, and healthy lifestyles. We invited Hidilyn because her story resonates well with what we are doing in the Joy Schools Program. Hidilyn’s healthy discipline was essential to her Olympic success, and that is something we wish our kids would be inspired to develop at such a tender age,” Chua added.
Hidilyn Diaz’s historic win inspired Filipinos worldwide to pursue their goals. And if her healthy lifestyle made her a champion, maybe it’s time to prioritize yours!
