When you’re going through a breakup, a little escape is a very welcome relief. While some people prefer to cope by laughing, others prefer to be met right where they are with plenty of angst. Whatever your style, to get you started, here are some good movie picks to get you through.
Some of them might commiserate with you, because they tap into the anger, pain, hurt, or sadness but you know, the others can inspire you by letting you know that it's not the end of the world and things will really get better.
500 Days of Summer. The feelings of someone who went through a pretty tough breakup, this movie gets it. And it lets you know that it's going to be okay. After Summer's wedding and Tom's decision to pursue architecture, the two come together to talk. And this scene right below is one of the most important and toughest scenes to watch. This is Day 488, when Tom and Summer swapped views on romance.
Up. The opening montage of Up is single-handedly both the most heartwarming and depressing scene in any movie, ever. We get to see Carl and Ellie's beautiful love story unfold, but there’s also the part where she finds out she can’t have babies and then later dies. Disney fans are often hopeless romantics, and that can make it extra crushing if things don’t work out with the person you love. But Disney fans don’t give up on love—just like how Carl and Ellie moved bravely onward in their quest to find happiness.
Legally Blonde. Sometimes we find comfort in odd places. Legally Blonde starring the talented and beautiful Reese Witherspoon is probably something you’ve seen before and enjoyed. If you need a little pick me up, Elle Wood's wisdom can absolutely make you realize that you lose people for a reason, so let yourself have a little fun and never doubt that you can do anything you set your mind to and work hard for!
50 First Dates. While we believe in the therapeutic advantages of films, you might want to check out this good and inspiring love story of Henry and Lucy. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore made waves when they brought to life the incredible story of a shallow man who makes a forgetful but lovable woman fall in love with him every day. Watch this tender tale of a couple which breaks up every night just to fall in love all over again the next day.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall. If you're looking to laugh after your breakup, this is undeniably one of the best movies for you. Adorable Jason Segel will have you laughing and crying along, sympathizing with his character. This one's especially good to watch if your significant other cheated on you, as you'll be able to relate to what happened to Sarah.
