Contrasting roles a welcome challenge for “Saturday Night Fever” cast members

Did you know that two of the cast members of “Saturday Night Fever” have played or are playing contrasting roles?

Yes, Broadway actress Jenna Rubaii and theater actress Carla Guevara-Laforteza have been in that situation, and they did not have a hard time adjusting with their roles.

Before “Saturday Night Fever,” Rubaii was part of the US and International tour cast of rock musical “American Idiot”, which is based on Rock band Green Day’s iconic album.

When asked about shifting from punk-rock to disco, Rubaii did not find it challenging. “It’s interesting because it is just a difference of era.”

In fact, even if Rubaii grew up with a pop-rock background, she does not see any big difference between the two genres. “It’s just the same thing; you just transferred to another decade [since both] have a pop aspect and it is still musical theater,” she added.

“Getting to do these two contrasting musicals is really nice; it’s interesting to explore both,” Rubaii elaborated.

For Carla, on the other hand, she is playing two contrasting roles in “Saturday Night Fever”: one as the pub singer, and the other as Flo Manero, the mother of lead character Troy Manero, which is played by Broadway actor Brandon Rubendall. “I’m basically the soundtrack of the show; I’m like the bookend of each scene,” Carla candidly added.

For Carla, it is a challenge for her to portray two contrasting characters in the musical. “I’m like a super total diva as a club singer, and a super old tired mom as Flo.” Yet, despite the challenge, she credits director Bobby Garcia for the extra challenge. “He [Garcia] loves giving me crazy, contrasting roles, and it makes me grow as an actress,” Carla added.

“Saturday Night Fever” will be having its Manila run at The Theater, Solaire Resort and Casino, ASEANA Avenue, Paranaque City from July 3 to July 26. Tickets can be purchased at Ticketworld outlets, or at
