When it was announced last year that free Wi-Fi access in MRT stations is in the works, many thought that the proposal is far from feasible, given the number of problems our MRT system is facing nowadays, plus the fact that our country has one of the slowest internet speeds in Asia.
Surprisingly, the proposal did push through this July! With the help of Globe Telecom, MRT stations in Guadalupe and Ortigas are now Wi-Fi hotspots, giving commuters free access to the internet as they wait for their next ride.
Though commuters are limited to using the service for 30 minutes at a time, this new development, along with the deployment of new trains in a few months, is a ray of sunshine for the problematic MRT system. Commuters can sure do a lot with the 30-minute long Wi-Fi access allocation, ranging from checking emails, getting the latest news, to posting the latest progress of or problems with the MRT thru social media.
As President Rodrigo Duterte puts emphasis on his "change is coming" slogan, we are assured that our MRT system will be receiving its much needed improvements in the coming days in order to make it first class.
