Lifestyle Hotshots: Chino Roque on What It Really Takes to Be An Astronaut

25-year-old Chino Roque is set to go to where no Filipino has gone before. (Clue: It’s where the Star Wars saga is set). After beating 24,000 aspirants, Chino (a private pilot, athlete, and CrossFit coach) became the very First Filipino Astronaut. “I feel humbled and honored to be named as the First Filipino astronaut, with that I feel the responsibility of carrying the hopes and dreams of aspiring Filipino astronauts.” Together with 23 other AXE Apollo Space Academy winners from all around the world, Chino will be travelling to space for an out of this world (literally!) experience.

Being in the spotlight, one would think that Chino has already gotten used to all the attention he’s been getting but “No, kinikilig pa rin ako like when people actually know who I am or when people come up to me randomly and ask ‘Are you the first Filipino astronaut?,’ parang wow solid, it humbles me.” And for someone whose name is bound to go down in history, Chino remains grounded. “I still see myself as a regular joe kasi winning the whole AXE Apollo Space Academy still hasn’t sunk in. Right now I’m just trying to give back and be a man for others.”

Busy as he is preparing for his space adventure while attending to his other commitments as a pilot and CrossFit coach, Chino still finds time to do the things he likes the most: Praying, traveling, and sharing knowledge. “I’ve been visiting schools, giving talks, something that will inspire them to reach for their dreams.” And if that dream is to become an astronaut, Chino has got you covered with these tips:

"Work hard. It requires a lot effort and determination."

"Be consistent. You should keep giving 101% effort every single day."

"Persevere. With all odds against you, you have to push through."

"Keep your composure. Stay calm in the face of pressure."

"Have Faith in God. With faith comes humility that everything you may receive is always his blessing."
