Cheat Sheet: Here's Expert Advice on Picking Out Swimwear for Your Body Type

Clueless on what swimsuit to buy? We chatted with Chalk Magazine's Fashion Editor, Kate Paras, for swimwear-shopping advice for every body type:

1. Petite. "Bright, solid colors look great, as small prints tend to make you look smaller, so avoid those," says Kate. Girls with this body type are lucky, as any type of suit fits you! For this season though, stick to one-piece swimsuits and string bikinis, or buy those with a plunging neckline, to create an hourglass effect. Don’t be afraid to bare some skin, but if you're the conservative type, bring along some chic coverups.

2. Curvy. Heavy in the chest and hips or butt area, curvy girls should choose swimsuits that conceal bigger parts of their body. So go for pieces that provide ample support and full coverage. Kate suggests halter cuts and suits with underwire support, as well as panelling details to create the illusion of a slimmer frame. For color, black, dark blue, or other deep colors will make you look slimmer. On the other hand, triangle bikinis and cutouts are no-nos.

3. Pear-shaped. Create the illusion of a smaller bottom using high-waist bikini bottoms. Boy shorts or suits that cut your legs are not for you, as the aim is to elongate your figure. Small prints for your bikini bottom makes the area look smaller, advises Kate. She adds, "Draw the attention of the eye towards the upper area of the body by opting for a detailed top like one that has ruffles, big prints, or an eye catching color." Also, a two-toned style will work to your advantage, so go for color-blocking!

4. Athletic. For this body type, proportion is key. You'll want to create the illusion of curves, so avoid vertical stripes, which tend to make you look longer and more boyish. Stick to cute two-piece suits that emphasize your chest and your buttthink floral patterns or retro prints and cutouts, with a little help of an underwire top. Or try sexy asymmetrical and full-cut bottoms. Say no to dull hues; bright and fun shades are in!
