What: Hang Son Doong Cave
Where: Phong Nha Ke Bang, Quang Binh, Central Vietnam
Who: Perfect for anyone who prefers the road less traveled
With the more popular cities in Vietnam, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, it came as a breath of fresh air to have discovered yet another lovely attraction in the said country. Here are more fun facts and reasons combined on why this falls not just in our Bucketlist Destination but should also be in yours:
1. Get the first dibs. The Hang Son Doong Cave was only extensively explored in 2009 by the British Cave Research Association. To date, more people have walked upon Mount Everest than have set foot here, which is located near the Ban Doong ethnic minority village in the Karst Mountains and home to a timeless way of life.
2. Go big or go home. The cave soars 200 metres in height, and is approximately 150 metres wide, and the entire cave system extends almost nine kilometres, with evergreen tropical forests growing within. It’s said to be the largest cave in the world which has two forests and even clouds inside.
3. Oldie but goodie. The ancient cave was carved from the Annamite Mountains almost three million years ago.
