When her husband, Spongecola frontman Yael Yuzon, ran the Paris marathon last year, singer-host-actress Karylle was there in full support; not only did she cheer for her man and encouraged Parisians to cheer for him as well—“I was on a high even if I didn’t run all the way. I was telling them, Bonjour, Mon Marie [hello, my handsome]… Philippines,” she recalls—she also ran the last 3K with him—chilly weather and all.
While running is an activity the Yuzons enjoy doing together, it’s also something Karylle does on her own—and with her current passion for running (check out her Instagram account for evidence!), you’d think she has got it bad for running since time immemorial. But did you know that her first running sprees were actually in the second floor of Serendra in Bonifacio Global City? Yes, you’ve got it right—she initially didn’t really run run. “I got into running because I wanted to wear the cute running outfits,” admits Karylle, whom we caught up with at the Philippine launch of adidas Pureboost X, an innovative running shoe designed for women. She recalls enjoying stocking up on cute tops and shorts, especially those from Stella McCartney, a personal favorite.
But that was x years ago—today Karylle is as serious as can be when it comes to running (she even had Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan and Jaymie Pizarro as coaches for a time), though her love for cute athletic outfits hasn’t changed one bit. “I try not to be too fashionable because it’s still running but I do go for shorts. I also don’t like running in sleeves,” she shares. This fine lady also makes sure she’s got her bases covered—literally: She always puts on shorts under her actual running shorts for safety, what with the proliferation of cameras and trigger-happy souls nowadays.
The first ever cover girl of Shape Magazine Philippines, reveals, though, that she’s never really been picky with shoe designs—until now, that is. She proudly shows off the three charms on her dark blue/granite/dark blue adidas by Stella Mccartney Pureboost X pair, three kings to symbolize her maiden name, Tatlonghari. The high performance shoe boasts of a unique floating arch detail designed specifically to work with the natural movements of a woman’s foot to help unleash energy more efficiently in every stride.
Karylle also stresses the importance of good socks. “There are socks that slide down when you run in them and that’s really bad, magkakakalyo ka,” she notes. And if you want her ultimate tip before running a marathon? Sleep in your running outfit! “I take a bath the night before the race so in the morning I’m ready, everything is in its place and ready to go—if you shower pa and you’re so slow, naku.”
For all of Karylle’ excitement to look cute when running, is there something she won’t wear? “I can't run around in a sports bra—but it remains a dream."
