As the love month gave the chills December lacked, it gave us more reason to, well, warm up. And what better way to amp up the temperature than by enjoying a glass of cocktail! Whether going solo, spending an intimate time with your beau, or in search for The One, meet your match among these cocktail creations (you know they're good because past Diageo Reserve World Class Bartender of the Year winners are the brains behind them) you can recreate right in the comforts of your own home. So, are you:
Single? Meet Love from Above. 2014 victor Yoma Rivera from Curator, who now works in Singapore at 28 Hong Kong Street, creates not only a drink, but a story. For Valentine’s Day, he thought of mixing up gifts people love giving during this time of the year. The mingling of chocolate, strawberry, mint, lemon juice, and Ron Zacapa, with its cinnamon, vanilla, caramel, and coffee notes, makes for a sweet and light companion for your All Singles Party.
Taken? Meet The Star of My Life. The inspiration behind this cocktail is—you guessed it—the star of the bartender’s life. AK Roxas’ mix perfectly represents his wife, he says. Bitter with hints of underlying sweetness, full-bodied with an interesting, pulpy texture, and simple yet captivating from the first taste, a romantic dinner capped off with this cocktail is a perfect end for a night to remember.
Still Searching? Meet Mon Amour. Cherry liquor, gin, egg whites, lemon, vanilla—sounds complicated? Not really! General Manager of ABV and reigning World Class champ Kenneth Bandivas’ cocktail is smooth and suave. Valentine’s Day should be easy, so is Mon Amour. It’s a crowd-pleaser, and who knows, as Kenneth says, through this concoction, he just might play the matchmaker.
To make your DIY route easier, Yoma, AK and Kenneth share their tips for made-at-home cocktails:
Simple is the way to go. You don’t need to be a legit bartender to create delicious cocktails! Simple mixes like Kir Royale, calamansi soda with gin, or vodka with ginger beer and lime are uncomplicated yet just as impressive.
Balance is key. If you want to spice up your drink, go ahead and add a dash of cayenne pepper, as Yoma advises. But also remember to strike a balance when it comes to the flavors, as he believes it is the secret to a good cocktail.
Put some love on it. “Just do it with love and passion,” AK simply puts.
