There are many ways one can be inspired with their designs. Aside from nature and industrial designs, which has been the trend as of late, one can be inspired with his loved ones, which is the case with budding designer Joseph Rastrullo has presented at his Red Box exhibit at the 62nd Manila FAME.
Rastrullo’s exhibit is inspired by the rainforest, exemplifying on his nature-inspired, geometrical designs evident with the light fixtures, chairs, and tables he has presented at his Red Box exhibit. However, there is another inspiration behind his set, and that is his grandparents from both sides.
Rastrullo's chair and table set, both named and designed after his grandparents who recently passed away.
Rastrullo shared that two of his grandparents passed away while preparing for his exhibit. “I decided to compose the pieces after them,” Rastrullo said, explaining that the chairs are named after his grandfather living in the Philippines, while his tables are named after his grandmother, and his light fixtures are named after his other grandfather, who is living in the United States.
His chair and side table set, both which are made of rattan, is described to be “sturdy yet soft”, which best describes Rastrullo’s grandparents who recently passed away.
As for the hanging lamp fixtures, Rastrullo explained that those best define his other grandfather, who is living in the United States. “Even though that he is far away, you would still feel their presence,” Rastrullo said.
“When you have your lamp at your dining table, you cannot reach it but the light is actually there. You know that he is there,” Rastrullo added, emphasizing on how important are his grandparents from both sides of the family is to him when it comes to being a grandson and his career as an industrial designer.
The “sturdy yet soft” nature of Rastrullo’s set is evident also with his use of rattan laminates, which Rastrullo explain is better than veneer or Formica as rattan laminate goes around the piece, not showing any edges which can be a cause for chipping. On average, it would take Rastrullo’s team around a week to come up with a sample for their clients.
Likening rattan’s properties to our grandparents like what Rastrullo did for his exhibit presented us how our grandparents would be to their grandchildren: Strict and sturdy yet tender and loving at the same time.
