We may now all know Paul Bettany for his portrayal of Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and as the voice behind JARVIS in all of the Iron Man movies, but he himself never knew he would made it that big at a time where he considered wrapping up his acting career.
“You see my character get born [in Age of Ultron], which likely has happened to me as an actor again,” Bettany describes his role as Vision, which he likens to how his acting career got resurrected.
Asked by one of the fans during the panel on September 19 at Asia Pop Comic Con (APCC), Bettany recounted how he had the biggest break in his career upon being asked if he could play the role of Vision.
While sitting on a sidewalk at Hollywood one day, a producer called Bettany, telling him that “he would never work in Hollywood again”. At first, the statement crushed Bettany’s acting career where it came to a point that he was close to calling it quits.
For a few minutes while pondering on his career in the sidewalk, Bettany received a call from Joss Whedon, director of Avengers, and was asked if he would like to play Vision. “I said yes [to the role,] and I sort of looked up to heaven and thought karma’s very quick these days,” Bettany recounted that moment.
After narrating the most dramatic twist in his acting career, Bettany stood up and reenacted how he reacted to Whedon’s call, to the cheers of the audience during the panel.
“That’s the true story of it all,” Bettany concluded on his biggest career break to date. “When they bend the rules, people trust them,” Bettany adds, appreciating the trust Whedon gave to him in playing the role of Vision in Age of Ultron.
Moral of the story? If one misses an opportunity, chances are that there’s a better one coming. After all, the fact that Bettany played the voice role of JARVIS in all the Iron Man movies was a foreshadowing of bigger things to come for his acting career.
