Give sexy waves and sleek hair a break: “Messy hair, don’t care” can very well be your mantra for your next glam affair. Your peg? Teen Queen Kathryn Bernardo, who rocked an effortlessly fab messy ponytail at the 9th Star Magic Ball—and according to her hairstylist John Valle, there’s no reason you can’t, too: “Embrace messy hair! It gives any look a relaxed chic vibe that will make you stand out in a cool way at any event.” He shares some tips on how to achieve different versions of messy hair—take your pick from the effortlessly gorgeous ‘dos he created for Kathryn, Janella Salvador, Denise Laurel, and Angelica Panganiban:
Kathryn Bernardo. “Our theme was undone glam, and a messy ponytail fit right into the equation. Her gown was super elegant with intricate beading at the back so we wanted to highlight that as well, plus, we want to draw attention to her beautiful complexion. I gave her relaxed, undone waves, which I then put up in a ponytail—for added oomph, I used extensions in lighter shades to complement Kath’s tanned skin.”
Janella Salvador. “Janella is only 17 years old, very young, so I want her to look youthful even if it’s a formal event. I did a messy side bun on her with a super deep side part. I first curled her hair, amped it up with volumizer and some hairspray, and tied it into a tousled bun.”
Denise Laurel. “For Denise, the look was Old Hollywood glam. I gave her sultry waves reminiscent of iconic beauty Veronica Lake’s to match her eye makeup—but with a modern twist, by making it look undone rather than uptight and too flawless.”
Angelica Panganiban. “Angelica is already established in the industry both for her acting prowess and her beauty, so she doesn’t need a look that tries too hard. I gave her side slicked hair that’s not your usual; it has a touch of that messy, relaxed vibe.”
To get the best red carpet hairstyle, John advises that you skip conditioner the night before your big event as it’s easier to style dry, textured hair. “For fab messy locks, don’t use a brush in mussing it up, use your hand instead. And don’t spray product directly on your hair. Spray it on your hands and then apply to your tresses in a scrunching motion.”
