Instead of the usual dresses and ballgowns, the 5th Philippine Fashion Ball asked its female guests to come dressed like the men—yup, in suits, pants, polos, brogues, or whatever defined androgyny for them, to honor the event’s featured designer, menswear icon Joey Samson. The ladies stepped up to the challenge, rocking various interpretations sprinkled with their own brand of chic and femininity. Check out how these five women made menswear look fantastic for the female form and sensibility:
Angel Locsin ditched the trousers, showed off some skin, and let down her silky, womanly locks. If you find pants too stiff, pair your tuxedo jacket with a skirt or shorts to add a sexy flair. A classic straight hairstyle (try a deep side part to switch things up) fits the minimalist ethos of menswear, but is still very feminine.
KC Concepcion donned a top with a floral applique detail and wore red lipstick. Not too keen about the clean, straight lines characteristic of menswear? Add some fun, femme details like frills, embellishments, and in KC's case, appliques. Red lipstick, of course, is a foolproof tool because it screams powerful and sultry.
Marina Benipayo chose pieces that accentuated her figure. Instead of hiding behind the typical menswear silhouette, Marina opted to wear an outfit that highlighted her womanly curves in the right way and in the right places. The camisole and vest combo showed off her lithe arms perfectly, while the low-slung trousers did her slim waist and hips much justice.
Agot Isidro exuded classic femininity in a basic white shirt and drop earrings. A must-have in every woman’s closet, the white shirt is the ideal canvas for many looks: Worn with a tuxedo suit, its softness is a breath of fresh air to the otherwise manly ensemble. To add a bit of glam (you don’t want to overdo it because it will defeat the purpose of wearing menswear), drop earrings, simple studs, or pearls will do the trick.
Phoemela Baranda spiced up her look with prints. Who says you should only stick to basics and neutrals when it comes to menswear? Phoem defied convention by wearing an embellished suit jacket and polka-dotted pants, and toting an animal print clutch—menswear just got so much more fun.
