Fresh turmeric, lavender syrup, balsamic vinegar, ginger, egg white, and salt are everybody’s kitchen mainstays—but guess what? You’ll never look at them the same way again because they are actually key to concocting exciting and intriguing cocktails that will help lift your spirits.
“Our taste buds are brilliant little guys. Most often they are resting, waiting for something different to awaken them. The use of salt, spice, and twang is guaranteed to resuscitate dormant buds,” says David Dennis, The Bowery’s resident mixologist. The 24-hour restaurant recently launched designer cocktails that capture the New York of the moment, and we asked David for his recos to help you get through some of life’s stickiest situations:
For someone who's nursing a broken heart... That Uptown Girl. Made with fresh strawberries, black pepper syrup, and balsamic vinegar, David says it's a cocktail that makes you feel like everything is going to be okay. “Just the ingredients alone and you have already forgotten about him. Try a few and he's old news!”
For someone who's watching her weight but wants to drink... The Anti-Zen Green Tea. David considers this yoga in a glass, and while this organic green tea that's naturally sweetened with honey is an alcoholic treat, it has bruised peppermint and ginger that makes it feel like body nourishment.
For someone who's about to embark on a fresh start... The Standing Ovation. You might be off to embark on a new chapter, but David says this elegant cocktail will make you savor every moment. Inspired by the classic, Aviation, it’s made of Gin, maraschino cherry, lavander syrup, and egg white and leaves a velvety feeling in your mouth.
For someone who's evading the crazy traffic... The Marga-riri. Red wine + apple cider vinegar + margarita, finished off with a salt and sugar rim, it’s got a twang that makes every sip not spent in traffic worth it. “It's got attitude, spunk, flare and just the right amount of bad-ass to justify the delay in going home,” notes David.
For someone who wants loads of confidence to go after the guy she wants... The Swazerac. A combination of chocolate liqueur and cocoa bitters kicked with 100 proof Rye whiskey, all you’ll need is one glass and, according to David, you’ll have enough swag to approach anyone your heart desires.
