In Focus: The Evolution of KathNiel in 6 Movies

Every time people hear "KathNiel," what comes to mind is a YA-romance-novel-like love team setup—a shy, awkward, and beautiful girl that is unsure of herself meets a mysterious brooding bad boy then they slowly fall in love. That's how people imagine their real love story to be, but they revealed to us in their most recent Chalk interview exactly how their reel romance turned into something real and how their relationship somehow evolved into something more.

Aside from their reel- and real-ationship, KathNiel has come a long way since the beginning of their on-screen pairing on the Sunday afternoon teen drama Growing Up. From there, they've grown so much, not just as a tandem, but also as individuals—from go-to teen love team to one of the most bankable stars on the big screen with their movies' continuous success every single time they release one.

Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla prove every time they release a project that they will deliver more than just kilig. They will always serve real talent and chemistry that no one can ever fake, making them a real power couple in the 'biz as they always bring something new to the table acting-wise. Not to mention, the KathNiel chemistry never fails to make their fans squeal. The 2017 Box Office Entertainment Awards even validated this by awarding the tandem the Box Office King and Queen award!

With the two soaring higher and higher than ever before, there's no better reason for us to honor our latest cover couple than reminiscing through their amazing journey on the big screen so far. Check out Chalk's rundown of KathNiel's evolution through the six films they starred in.

Must Be... Love (2013)

KathNiel's debut film as the headlining actors, this coming-of-age film about Patchot Espinosa (Bernardo) who's "one of the boys" and Ivan Lacson (Padilla) who's Patchot's playful childhood best friend. Must be... Love is Ugly Duckling meets Cinderella, portraying the tale of how the boyish Patchot transformed into the blooming young lady Patricia. KathNiel made a mark as a formidable love team through this debut film when their effective acting performances tugged at everyone's heartstrings, especially Kathryn's believable portrayal of a girl who starts falling for her best friend. Oh, the KN feels!

Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay (2013)

A project that separated KathNiel from the other love teams of our generation! When the love team would easily break the box office with rom-coms, Star Cinema threw a curveball and gave them a horror flick for their very first MMFF entry back in 2013. This movie showed just how much the production powerhouse trusts the tandem by letting Kath and DJ explore just how far their love team can go.

She's Dating the Gangster (2014)

Based on a best-selling Wattpad novel of the same name, She's Dating the Gangster is the tearjerker that cemented KathNiel's place in the industry with their powerful portrayal of Kenji and Athena as lovers that were separated by circumstances, reunited by fate, but forced apart by death.

Crazy Beautiful You (2015)

In this Mae Cruz-Alviar film, Bernardo portrays rebellious teen Jackie is forced to help her mother in her medical mission in Tarlac as a form of rehabilitation. There, she meets Padilla's high-spirited lad Kiko (Padilla) and the kilig ensues. While the story is formulaic, KathNiel inevitably makes a mark in the box office with stellar performances praised by many.

Barcelona: A Love Untold (2016)

This film is monumental for every KathNiel for many reasons. Not only does Barcelona mark their first project with veteran director Olivia Lamasan, the movie also features Kathryn and Daniel's very first kissing scene on the big screen. It also showcases their growth as actors with their first hard-hitting drama film. Who can ever forget, "'Wag mo akong mahalin dahil mahal kita. Mahalin mo ako dahil mahal mo ako. Because that is what I deserve." O. M. G. Tears!

Can't Help Falling in Love (2017)

Finally, the latest in KathNiel's storied filmography: Can't Help Falling In Love perfectly showcases Kath and DJ's onscreen charm. The two take their audience on an emotional rollercoaster, making them laugh, kilig, and cry, ultimately proving that they aren't just here for fan service—it's as if the film was made to say "KathNiel is here to stay."
