Classic, elegant, and sophisticated. These are the three keywords Miss International 2016 Kylie Verzosa gave her stylist Ryuji Shiomitsu for the looks she wanted to wear as she vied for the title in Tokyo, Japan.
As Ryuji remembers, he first met Kylie when she was still into modeling. "We did a shoot for Avel Bacudio’s Philippine Fashion Week collection," he shares. And from then on, they stayed in touch on social media and totally clicked.
For the Miss International 2016 pageant, as Kylie pointed out, Ryuji shares that this beauty queen specifically told him that she wants to veer away from the typical beauty pageant look that you usually see. A more toned down, minimal approach to the classics is what they aim for. Less frou frou, less embellished, and more points of interest a.k.a more style. A little bit of classicism and a little bit of modernism.
"My team and Kylie only had one night to pre-select, fit, and trim down her wardrobe. We really got a lot, maybe that's roughly around 50 pieces to choose from. And those included smart beautiful casual day wear, special occasion wear, evening gowns, competition gowns, shoes, accessories, and more."
And when it comes to fashion, Kylie surely doesn't dilly-dally. "She knows what she wants and I like that. It does make styling her very easy. If she likes it she most definitely will wear it," he adds.
Now, let's all take a closer look at Kylie's most stylish pageant clothing pieces, know the fashion designers behind every creation, and fashion tips from Ryuji:
Kylie wore Francis Libiran’s creations for her National Costume and Evening Gown competitions during the pageant. Pinoy pride at its finest!
This stunning one-piece swimsuit oozes sophistication with its cut and rich emerald green fabric. It is a custom made bikini made by Mikee Andrei for the pageant's swimsuit competition.
There's no doubt Ryuji did an amazing job in helping Kylie put together ensembles that showcase her dainty yet sophisticated personality which made her truly stand out during the pageant festivities. Ryuji's topnotch style notes? "I’m quite fascinated with contradictions: Making something that it's not; Suggestivism; Bootleg fashion; Flipping of paradigms; Minimalism; Maximalism; Post-Modernism; Fashion as Art/Art in Fashion; Pop Culture; '80s and '90s revival; Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie among others. Fashion is a holistic field so it’s good to be interested in a lot of things."
