Hot Stuff: The Philippines Breaks a Gastronomic World Record In The Mushroom Category

During History Con, there were special events that involved breaking world records. Among those successful attempts include the “King of Burger” Rix Francisco breaking the record for the most number of burgers eaten in a minute, Francis Gerodias and Andrew Casano breaking the record for the longest TV watching marathon, and the attempt to cook the largest serving of sautéed mushrooms.

Francisco, a seasoned competitive eater, managed to eat five burgers in the span of one minute, while Gerodias and Casano spent 100 hours and 15 minutes watching TV. As for the sautéed mushroom cook off, a team effort from the Center for Culinary Arts (CCA), headed by Chef Wix Luna and Jolly Eats managed to cook a ginormous sautéed mushroom dish that weighed a total of 335kg.

A team of 30 chefs helped in cooking 320kg worth of mushrooms, along with 20kg worth of ingredients, which include chopped garlic, butter, oyster sauce, canola oil, salt, and ground pepper.

The record-breaking attempt was both CCA and Jolly Eats' way to showcase how easy one can cook mushrooms, along with them being tagged as a “superfood” for its health benefits. When cooked, mushrooms are rich in antioxidants and fiber, and help in preventing cancer. In addition, they are also rich in minerals like selenium, copper, niacin, potassium, phosphorous, iron, and vitamin C.

They are delicious and healthy at the same time. You should try it for yourself!

As a proof that they can be a substitute to meat (mushrooms are rich in protein, too!), CCA and Jolly Eats served this massive batch of sautéed mushrooms to thousands of visitors at History Con last August 27.

Chefs who participated in the cook off helped one another in transporting 340kg of sauteed mushrooms to the stage, serving it to visitors present at History Con.

Paired with rice or pita bread, the sauteed mushrooms proved to be a filling dish to the visitors present.

Visitors who tried the sauteed mushrooms were all smiles as they patiently lined up and wait for their turn.
