Daily Diaries: Iza Calzado Teaches Us the Value of Treating Stars as Regular Human Beings

This week's life learning courtesy of actress Iza Calzado: Not all fan boy/girl sightings need a photo op or selfie for proof. Sometimes, it's the story behind the sighting that makes it much more memorable.

How Iza handled her unexpected encounter with retired football star David Beckham at Erewhon market in Los Angeles, California is testament to this: Instead of going crazy fangirling, Iza chose to treat Beckham like a real human being, interacting with him on a more personal level rather than letting her starstruck self take over.

Posted this story on my private Facebook account earlier and thought It would be nice to share it with you guys.. I just met and had a lovely chat with David Beckham at Erewhon!!!!! I saw a good looking guy by the food section and thought "looks like Beckham" so I smiled at him and he smiled back. Saw him again, exchanged smiles but I wasn't sure but the tattoos should have been a dead give away. I then proceed to line up to pay. He then puts his basket after me. I said "Sorry but I have to ask, are you David Beckham" and he said "yes, I am." And I was like "oh gosh, I just had to make sure." Then I added "I'm from the Philippines so I'm not really from around here so I had to double check. I'm Iza." Then we shook hands. He told me he was in the PH 9 months ago and I asked if it was for a football thing and he said Unicef sent him there. So I said "oh for Haiyan.. Thank you for doing that." Then I was called up to the cashier and he said "It was lovely to meet you." He was the nicest and even said bye to me as I was leaving and said "It was very nice to meet you." OMG I'm dying!!!!!! ?? Thank you, David Beckham, for being a lovely human being! I know your are know for your good looks and football skill but for me, your greatest strength is your kindness. I am now a FAN!!!! ?????? P.S. To those asking about taking a selfie.. No, I didn't ask for a photo. I would rather he remember our conversation and that I made him feel more like a human being rather than a piece of public property. Pero Juskoooo, grabe pagpigil ko at Sabay tili pagsakay sa uber!!! ??

Given the star status of Beckham, who's got no less than iconic fashion designer (and former Spice Girl) Victoria Beckham for his wife, and equally handsome children, one would expect him to be intimidating and hard to approach. This was not the case for Iza, who even had to ask Beckham if he was indeed, well, David Beckham.

After confirming that it was indeed Beckham himself, Iza engaged in small talk with the football star while waiting in line at the cashier. “He told me he was in the PH 9 months ago and I asked if it was for a football thing and he said UNICEF sent him there,” Iza shared. It ended with an "It was lovely to meet you" remark from Beckham.

Concluding her story, Iza, who's currently in the United States to host Binibining Pilipinas USA and Binibining Pilipinas Teen USA, has these words of wisdom for us when it comes to meeting our idols in the least expected places:

“I would rather he remember our conversation and that I made him feel more like a human being rather than a piece of public property.”

Well said Iza! May we all put this in mind every time, because, after all, no matter how famous they may be, celebrities are, in one way or another, just like us who want to be valued for who they are beyond their famous personas.
