Cheat Sheet: An Easy Guide to Face Contouring for Beauty Beginners

When it comes to highlighting and contouring, there's a fine (bronzer-caked) line between enhancing your best features and painting on an entirely new face. Read on for some tips on how to bring out your cheekbones, slim your nose, and sculpt your face subtly with contouring makeup:

1. Determine your face shape. Different face shapes need different contouring or shaping, some will need more highlighting while others will use more contouring to help enhance them and create the shape you are after.

Oval. Contour the sides of the forehead and below the cheekbones.

Square. Contour along the jawline and cheekbones then highlight your forehead and chin.

Round. Contour on the temples, cheekbones, and the sides of jawline, highlight on the chin and the forehead.

Heart. Contour along the forehead, highlight under the eye, below the cheekbones, and chin.

2. Get the right products. For contouring to look natural, you should stick to products that are within the color range that you would usually wear. If your skin is warm-toned, go warm-toned. Avoid using products that are very warm, something that is too orange won’t look natural. Instead, look for a slightly more grey version of what you would use as a regular bronzer.

Try: The Maybelline V-Face Duo Stick and Powder for precise contouring and a radiant finish.

1. Apply dark shade along hairline, hollows of cheeks, and sides of nose bridge.

2. Appy highlighter along the high points of your face, blend with fingertips.

3. Use V-Face Powder to set.

3. Consider your skin tone. One shade most definitely does not fit all. When contouring, shades of darker makeup from blushers to pigments can be used depending on what type of look you are creating. Good colors are brownish pinks, brownish grays, taupe, and again any shade that is a few degrees darker than your skin tone.

And to create a perfect canvas for your makeup, make sure you start with a clean, moisturized face and never, ever skip sunblock. Try: The Bioré Aqua Rich Watery Essence and the Bioré Aqua Rich BB Essence that will surely give you a weightless and transparent finish; the latter also gives a 3D brightening effect that's really perfect for facial contouring.

4. Know where to shade. Let the highlighters intervene to emphasize your looks to make your best features stand outcheekbones, the temples, the brow bones, the bridge of the nose, the apples of your cheeks and the jaw bone. Not only will you be able to sculpt your face and balance your features, but also give your skin that natural, beautiful glow.

5. Blend, blend, blend. If you still struggle with harsh lines and a brush isn’t do doing the job, try using a beauty blender or a foundation sponge in a rolling or dabbing motion. Sometimes a damp sponge works the best.
