Wagga Wagga is a proudly local restaurant whose menu takes inspiration from different countries in the Caribbean like the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, andPuerto Rico, but ensures familiarity to the Filipino palate. Headed by Chef Justin David, all dishes, down to the sauces, are made from scratch. It’s for nearby office goers looking for affordable lunch meals and curious foodies open to tasting a new worldly cuisine. It’s not for people who are looking for classic Pinoy rice meals. We recommend their specialty jerk chicken, the Mofongo Con Pollo, and Chicharones Dominicano. Our insider tip is it’s also a good place to drink because they serve cheap booze. Pitmaster’s is local diner offering South American style meats that are smoked low and slow, sandwiches and a whole lot of specialty sides. It’s for manly dates or fun fingerlicking meals with the kids. It’s not for vegetarians. We recommend the Pit Platter, which comes with 4 of their smoked specialties, 6 sides, all 3 house blend BBQ sauces and 1 carafe of home brewed iced tea. Our insider tip is utensils are optional, get your hands dirty! P.S. Check out our list of underrated ribs in the metro.

Tipsy Pig is a man pub most popular for its signature brews, extensive beverage list and good food. It’s the newest venture from the group that brought us Reserve, URBN, and Relik. It’s for after work drinks, evening diners and the late-night pub crawlers. It’s not for people looking for a quiet night. We recommend the Vineyard Pizza, Tipsy Wings and draft beers. Our insider tip is they start allowing smokers inside by 10pm. New branch alert: Tipsy Pig opens in BGC.

Sobremesa (meaning ‘the time spent at the table after a meal’) is headed by Chef Benjo Tuason of Relik and URBN fame, and is one of the newest fusion restaurants in Ortigas serving South American dishes with a Filipino twist. It’s for people looking for good southern-flavored dishes. It’s not for those in search of burgers, fries and milkshakes. We recommend the Barako coffee-crusted Ribeye steak, Bulalo Estofado and Chorizo Croqueta. Our insider tip is they have special brunch items served between 10am–2pm only. Read our full feature here.

RUB offers no frills American grub with, of course, ribs as their specialty dish plus sidings of your choice. The owners Monica Kabigting, Mobile Data Services head of Globe Telecom, and her husband targets families and kids looking for fun, affordable comfort food. It’s for people who don’t mind getting their hands, and maybe faces, dirty. It’s not for people who don’t like small crowded spaces when eating. We recommend Raki’s BBQ Ribs with spiced fried rice and the Pizzadilla. Our insider tip is they don’t take reservations at their Tomas Morato branch.

Haru Sushi Bar & Restaurant, from the same owners of another Kapitolyo favorite Cafe Juanita, is a casual dining spot serving affordable Japanese cuisine. The sakura-filled interiors with a bridge smack at the middle adds to the authenticity and romance of the place. It’s for sushi lovers. It’s not for people looking for a quick hit ramen bowl. We recommend the Salmon Sashimi, Spicy Tuna Sashimi and Unagi Kabayaki. Our insider tip is to visit the extension at the basement to see a rare collection of Japanese memorabilia from your childhood days. Love sushi? Locavore

True to its name, Locavore serves only locally grown and produced Filipino dishes with a French touch from Chef Mikel Zaguirre, former head chef of La Regalade. The open kitchen and industrial interiors adds to the modern hipster vibe of the restaurant. It’s for people who enjoy a twist to the classics. It’s not for an intimate occasion. We recommend the Sizzling Sinigang, Lechon & Oyster Sisig, and its underrated Ginataang Kalabasa. Our insider tip is to watch out for their seasonal market specials and new menu items. P.S. They are set to open a 2nd branch at Forbes Town Center in BGC, for now you can visit his new taco shop in the south, Taqueria 101.

Taco Vengo is a new taco container shop hiding behind a facade of restaurants along United St. in Kapitolyo. It serves authentic Mexican favorites like tacos, burritos, and nachos. It’s for Manila’s taco crawlers. It’s not for people looking for quesadillas. We recommend the Steak Taco, Pork Cheek Confit Burrito, Nachos por Machos, and the Chwaffle (churros + waffle). Our insider tip is their condiments are not free. Here’s a fun fact: Taco Vengo is owned by the same people behind the Nacho King food stands, which you probably have seen around malls. P.S. Check out all its hiding neighbor container restaurants, here.
