Prints are usually big every summer, happy news for us ladies because, yay!, more reason to look dainty—on the other end of the style spectrum though, are the guys, most of the male species perhaps, who will never really be big on them. Not such good news if you want those adorable couple photos, right? And what’s a good girlfriend (or friend, or sister, because, you know, you just feel responsible for how they look) got to do? Educate them on the art of the print, of course.
If your man project needs major convincing, here’s a compelling argument: Hot guys aren’t afraid to wear prints—and we’ve got Tommy Esguerra, Richard Juan, and LA Aguinaldo to prove that. At the recent SM Style Up event, we caught a preview of how these hotties rock the prints trend, in SM Youth’s summer collection, which gives a fresh new spin on classic themes like nautical and tropical dressing. Now we’re breaking down how your guy can actually cop their looks (for summer and beyond):
1. Go big or go home. When it comes to prints now, there’s no point in wearing them halfheartedly. Yes have the boys sink their feet into the sleek pool of print on print—and no, it doesn’t always have to mean bright, bold colors. Tip: Pick prints in neutral tones and crisp silhouettes so you still look handsome and mabango no matter where you're off to. LA Aguinaldo’s take on sailor dressing, for instance, looks professional, but will work well for first dates or for that meet-the-parents moment, too.
2. Upgrade your definition of laidback. Tell your man to stop equating weekend wear to basics already. We totally get how guys want to appear relaxed, but turning things up a notch via this season’s trends won’t cost him so much effort anyway, so why shortchange himself (a note for us girls also)? Trade his usual denim or white shorts for graphic print ones like this pair on Tommy Esguerra—they’re easy to wear (can be paired with minimally-printed polos if he's still developing his fasyon sensibilities) and the cool hues are refreshing on the eyes.
3. Give matchy-matchy a try. Nope, it isn’t no longer just for girls. Summer enlightens us on how co-ords can be great additions to every guy’s closet as well. Pinoy Big Brother 737 alumnus Richard Juan shows us how effortlessly this can be pulled off—stripes are a starter’s best bet (and of course, you’ll never go wrong with classic black and white).
