Yes, I’m putting that out there—no matter how much we try to deny it or to hide it, the countless bakeries here (on top of our avid consumption of rice) prove that we have a special relationship with carbs, and sugar, too. It’s always such a joy when we discover new breads, pastries, and cakes, and if you ask me, we all might as well make every calorie count by going for treats that really pack in the taste.
We discovered this new bakery in Salcedo, Makati where classic bread, pastry, and cake favorites get an upgrade, French-style but sans the pretense (read: homey interiors and an open layout that encourages interaction): Boulangerie 22. They’ve got everything from muffins to macarons, sourdough to sweet cakes, all carefully crafted using a combination of classical (bakers) and modern (state-of-art machines and technology) methods. The breads and pastries are individually packed and last for about a week or so, so you can take them home as pasalubong or baon for the little ones.
The banana muffin is a must-try, oozing with flavor yet not overwhelming; and you know those floss breads everyone's crazy about? Boulangerie 22's version is very meaty and tasty (can actually pass for a full meal if you're not too hungry), whether you opt for the basic one or the spicy version.
And they've got their selection of sourdoughs and pizza breads. The sourdoughs not only boast of a distinctive tangy flavor, but are also loaded with lactic acids that make vitamins and minerals in the flour more available to the body, and an excellent source of fuel for good bacteria or prebiotics for the body.
There are the cakes and the macarons, of course. We're loving this indulgent Dark Chocolate Curls Cake, which is also too pretty that it would make for a lovely dining table centerpiece.
