Style Spotlight: New Year, New Style, and the Rise of Design Collectives

The great fashion houses of today were built and once run by singular names—Yves Saint Laurent, Coco Chanel, Pierre Balmain, all of whom built an empire based solely on their individual tastes. So what happens when you put more than one creative head at the helm of a fashion label?

Fashion collectives run the gamut from duos to a group of seven. It’s the kind of #squadgoal that’s worth mentioning because, for one, they’re changing the fashion landscape we know today. Just look at Kenzo’s turn around when co-Creative Directors Humberto Leon and Carol Lim took over in 2011 or more recently at Public School with Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow, the duo recently appointed as Creative Directors of DKNY. But the collective that’s on everyone’s radar these days is Vetements, the breakout French label from whence Balenciaga’s new CD is borne from. The new guards of Parisian streetwear, Demna Gvasalia, his brother Guram, and five other friends suddenly find themselves and their new age fashion sensibility thrust into the spotlight.

So what does this mean for the rest of us? Much like the holidays, the rise of design collectives in fashion incites a need to celebrate a gathering of collective minds. With the new squads come a season of change, just in time for the New Year—from new dressing options to new fashion perspectives, it’s all about embracing a new you, and perhaps a new wardrobe.
