Pia Wurtzbach: The True Makings of a Queen

Pia Wurtzbach: The True Makings of a Queen

Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach shall always go down in history as the woman who lost and as the woman who won.

A 26-year old Filipino-German, Pia hails from Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental, Mindanao, and has made a name for herself having tried for the Binibining Pilipinas crown more than once. People might have talked about her elegant beauty, her signature “papaya walk”, her bodacious body or her “never give up” outlook.

But real talk, can we please give her more credit and discuss what truly made her “the Queen” in the recently concluded Miss Universe pageant held at the Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas Resort and Casino, USA?

Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach is Miss Universe 2015...

Because she is perseverance personified

Do you still remember when how as a kid, your classmates would write about their favorite motto that goes something like “Try and try until you die / succeed”? Pia joined the Binibining Pilipinas pageant three times until she finally got the crown (third time's a charm!) and earned the chance to represent the Philippines to this year’s Miss Universe pageant. Yes, emphasis on the word “earned”. Because you can only earn something when you persevere, even in the face of mockery or failure—which is what Pia just did.

Because she carries that certain sweet innocence

Look at her, as in really look, into her eyes and her smile. Sweet, innocent and yet confident. Pia simply embodies the true Filipina nature. Yes, she’s all that and more.

Because she just gets it

When asked about the US putting up military bases in the Philippines, she brought up about the two countries’ history dating back to the colonial period, and its current good relationship with each other. She just gets it; two countries working on a common goal, two countries helping each other hand in hand.

Because she is graceful in defeat and more so, in victory

We’ve all seen it—the crown was given to someone else, and then it was suddenly hers. Whether or not it was the first announcement which happened to be a mistake or the part where she was called on as the true winner, she remained with grace, ever so humble and regal.

Because she has a cause that she stands by

We can rally behind Miss USA when she said something about inspiration, chasing your dreams, and women empowerment. We can rally behind Miss Colombia when she said something about her overall attributes being aligned with that of a Miss Universe winner.

But at the end of the day, and all biases aside, we want what Miss Philippines wants—a good influence for the youth and a voice for raising awareness on socially relevant issues.

Nothing could be better than having someone “confidently beautiful with a heart” such as Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach lead the way. She is again, after all, the woman who lost… and the woman who won.
