“The Force” May Very Well Be With Pia Wurtzbach at the Miss Universe Pageant

For the first time in a long time, Miss Philippines has indeed arrived, style-wise, on the Miss Universe stage.

Pia Wurtzbach was the hot topic on social media today after the Miss Universe preliminaries—all her outfits were spot on and truly enhanced her exquisite beauty and were made by Filipino designers who are bringing much pride to our country through their internationally-lauded work. Dubai-based designer Albert Andrada crafted Pia’s intricate national costume, while her dazzling red gown was made by Los Angeles-based designer Oliver Tolentino.

While Oliver’s help was only enlisted last minute (Pia was supposed to wear an off the rack piece prepared by the pageant organizers but it just didn’t suit her, so her team called up Oliver and he sent over an array of pieces from his Beverly Hills boutique to Las Vegas), his masterful creation fit Pia like a glove: The red-orange hue gave her a brilliant, rosy glow and the beautifully beaded bodice flaunted her fit physique perfectly while maintaining a level of sophistication.

Finally, the true essence of Filipino design was showcased in this worldwide event—the best way to pay homage to all of our talented designers, who themselves are staunch supporters of every Filipina who walked, walks, and will walk that Miss Universe stage.

Having worn a gown by Oliver puts Pia in the ranks of various Hollywood celebrities like Tyra Banks, Emmy Rossum, Fergie, Carrie Underwood, and Star Wars star Carrie Fisher. “The Force” may very well be with Pia as the fabulously sashayed down the Miss Universe catwalk, showing the true essence of the Filipina: A lethal combination of beauty, confidence, and purpose.

Carrie Fisher wore an Oliver Tolentino masterpiece last January, when she presented her mother, Hollywood icon Debbie Reynolds (one of whose most notable work is Singin’ in the Rain) with the Screen Actors Guild’s 51st Lifetime Achievement award. The black silk chiffon, empire-cut gown by Oliver that featured a hand-beaded bodice and beaded lace sleeves wonderfully married simplicity with elegance.
