Brush Up On Your Pasta Knowledge in Celebration of World Pasta Month!

While of Italian origin, pasta dishes have become a staple in many Filipino homes, be it for regular dinners or special occasions. Who can resist a big heaping bowl of pasta, covered with your choice of sauce and sprinkled with loads of Parmesan cheese? But did you know that this culinary favorite actually has a rich history? In fact, October is World Pasta Month!

Produced according to the tradition of true Italian pasta, Doña Elena Al Dente Pasta brings the Filipino’s passion for the versatile noodle to the forefront with exciting activities to celebrate World Pasta Month. The live cooking showdown of the finalists of the Doña Elena Al Dente Online Pasta Recipe Contest is something to look forward to—the finalists were chosen via Instagram and www.AlDentePastaMonth.com (those who wanted to join had to post a photo of a dish made using the brand’s pasta), and the grand finals is one of the highlights of their big event this Friday, October 9, dubbed the Doña Elena Al Dente Pasta Festa.

To be held at the Main Mall Atrium of the SM Mall of Asia, the event will feature an Italian Food Fair, a cooking demo by Chef Ben Bernardo of Café Royal & Pasha and Chef Roberto Bellini of the famed Bellini’s Restaurant, and a Pasta Eating Contest. Doña Elena. Broadcaster and DJ Grace Lee will be hosting the event.

As you await this exciting celebration of the wonderful food that is pasta, here are some pieces of trivia you’ll enjoy learning:

There is actually an Italian law that prescribes that pasta must be made using 100% durum wheat semolina, which is the hardest of all the wheat varieties and has the highest protein content. It is the use of durum wheat that makes pasta “al dente” or “firm to the bite.”

Traditional bronze dies, which gives the noodles ridges, helps the sauce cling to the noodles more, for a richer flavor.

The celebration of World Pasta Month started in Rome in 1995 with the First World Pasta Congress, and countries all over the world have come up with their own festivities since.
