American actor and singer Idina Menzel is coming to the Philippines with her concert at SM Mall of Asia Arena on June 7. While she gained recent popularity for her rendition of “Let It Go,” a song from the Disney Movie “Frozen”, here are other things you may not know about her:
Her early beginnings
Born to a Jewish family, Menzel was born in Syosset, New York to Helena and Stuart Menzel. Idina’s mother worked as a therapist, while her father worked as a salesman.
After her parents divorced when she was 15 years old, she started showcasing her now-famous singing talent by working as a wedding and bar mitzvah singer while studying at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
Her Broadway career
Menzel showcased her talent after auditioning and being part of the Broadway musical Rent in 1995, where she played the role of Maureen Johnson. For her performance, she earned her first-ever Tony nomination for best Leading Actress in a musical.
Her next Broadway musical performance was Wicked in 2003, where she won the Tony award for Best Leading Actress in a musical for her role as Elphaba.
Menzel’s latest Broadway musical, If/Then, where she plays the lead role of Elizabeth, was also critically-acclaimed that she earned another Tony nomination for her performance.
Her career as a singer and actress
Despite making a mark as a Broadway performer, Menzel also has four studio albums to boot, from her 1998 debut Still I can’t be Still to her latest album Holiday Wishes, which was released on 2014 and debuted as #1 at the Billboard Holiday Albums Chart.
Aside from being a recording artist, Menzel also had recurring guest appearances with television series Glee, and also appeared in the movie Enchanted as Nancy Tremaine.
